Largemouth bass or trout-bass is one of the types of perches belonging to the genus of black basses. This fish also can be named as bass; it’s an American name of perch that is widely spread in Russia. Originally, largemouth bass is from North America, although the representatives of this species are living in the basins of the Black Sea, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.
The bass body has an olive-green color with dark or black spots that are forming a toothed horizontal stripe on the both sides of the body. The representatives of this species are the largest among the black perches, their full-length is 75 cm(2) and maximum unofficial length is 11, 4 kg, moreover females are larger than males.
Largemouth bass belongs to the predators. The food of young basses is mostly shrimps, a small fish, insects and amphipods. Adults feed off small fish (Bluegill sunfish), snails, salamanders, crayfish, frogs, waterfowls, snakes, mammals and young alligators.
Perches prefer calm waters in which they can hide behind the vegetation and wait for food. Largemouth black bass spawning occurs once a year between March and July. Males prepare nests, building them on sand or pebble bottom. After coupling, female lays 1000 or 4000 grains of roe and male fertilizes them and try to guard till they become small fishes. The fish lives about 16 years.
The young largemouth bass has the appearance slightly different from the adult largemouth bass, mainly in color and pigmentation spots. The body of this species is elongated, flattened on the sides. The big head corresponds to height of perch’s body, equals a third to the entire length of the bass body.
Largemouth bass or just bass is a commercial fish in the North America. It’s rather popular cause it has tasty and tender meat and easy to cook. Americans cook perches differently with using spices. It can be stewed, fried, boiled, grilled or baked under foil in the oven. But one of the delicious ways of cooking is stewing in beer. First of all you should prepare fish for cooking by separating fillets and portioned slices, then salt them and pepper.
Take a deep pan and fry onions in butter until ready (it has a golden color). Add to the onions a few spoonfuls of flour and fry until brown. Pour to the pan 2 glasses of beer, stir until appearance of bubbles. Put into the sauce not much sugar and lay the fish on the bottom of the pan. Reduce the heat a little, cover the pan and leave the bass to stew for 15 minutes. Pour the ready fish with sauce on the plate. The dish is very tasty; the meat is easy stratified if stewed enough.
The delicious meat is the weighty reason but not the only one of hunting for largemouth bass. Bass is of a great interest as a representative of sport fishing. Behavior of perch allows fishermen to think well before choosing the place for fishing, lures and method of hunting. Nowadays, in Russia, Italy, Spain and Japan competitions of sport fishing for American perch are constantly held. In Russian waters largemouth black bass can be found not often, moreover in a single instance, but interesting fishing and tasty unforgettable meat make people to breed bass in the reservoirs with other representatives of the underwater world.
It lives in stagnant waters of North America East of the Rockies, from southern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Successfully acclimatized in Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Italy and Cyprus. Largemouth basses can inhabit almost any lakes, reservoirs, ponds, medium and large rivers. They are so adaptable that can live in ditches, streams and canals, this happens cause of wide diapason of temperatures (from + 32 to -20 degrees Celsius) in which they can exist. The perfect temperature for bass varies from +18 to +30 degrees Celsius. Bass can live in muddy, dirty or transparent water, but they prefer water without flow, abundant vegetation or flooded timber. This fish spends all the time under water, seeks for shelter in lily pads, stumps, weeds, rocks, bushes, or stonewalls, but it can survive without shelter.
Largemouth bass lives in shallow water more often than in depth. However, waters that do not have enough places for shelter are not good for this fish, so it will be likely seen in the deep waters not far from cliffs, channels and rocky places. American perch is not a migratory fish; it prefers to stay in the place within habitats during a long time.
However, perches begin to migrate if the availability of food, conditions for spawning and level of comfort decrease in their current location. Migration also depends on the season. In the beginning of spring when the time for spawning comes, largemouth bass will move from the cold deep waters to warm places. They stay in shallow waters during spawning; after the cold spring fronts they move to the deeper water not far from the place of spawning.
After the completion of spawning a lot of perches stay in shallow waters till the temperature of water rises above +22 degree Celsius. Then they create summer residence in the deep water, moving through the shallows in the early morning or at night seeking for food. Largemouth bass comes back to the shallows in fall and returns to the deep waters in wintertime.
Cordage and equipment
The result of fishing depends on proper chosen cordage. Largemouth bass can be caught on spinning, but the important moment in that method is to choose the right elements. Methods of fishing on perch is similar to methods of pike fishing, so you should be prepared to catch a pike instead of a perch. In this case you should choose a steel supply and a thick and strong fishing line.
Experienced anglers prefer using rotating spoon in catching bass. This lure is the best for such predators. It creates vibrations of water, reflects the light and attracts the attention of largemouth bass.
You should pay attention to the color of a spoon. The bright ones are good in clear, sunny weather, cause they will reflect sunlight and be some kind of irritant for bass. They look more contrast from the deep waters when the sky is light blue. In bad gloomy weather it’s better to use pale spoons or the same color as the water. At night fishing choose the dark baits. A good decision will be to catch largemouth bass on a jigging spoon. You can throw the fishing line on a long distance with this bait. The jigging spoons usually are used in pike fishing, but also they apply for bass.
It’s better to catch largemouth bass using different lures and cordages. However, if you choose a fishing rod, you should remember some rules. Firstly, find the proper lure. It can be small fishes, worms or frogs, or artificial – silicon worms, spoons and wobblers. Do not underestimate fishes. If you just wear the worm on a hook and throw into the water, you’ll get nothing. The lure should have a natural view. You must lead the lure and dispose the sinker properly not close from baits. Typically, the distance between sinker and lure is 10 – 12 centimeters.
In deep waters it’s better to fish on the bottom. Drop the sinker on the bottom and put the bait a little bit higher, or just use feeder rods with a sliding sinker. While using feeder you should look after the tension of the fishing line, otherwise you cannot feel the fish biting. If you prefer to use a live bait, place it 30-50 cm from the sinker. Hook on the lure for the lip or behind the back. Throw the rod and wait for the hungry largemouth bass. This method (with using live bait) is productive in catching big fishes of largemouth bass.
• If you want to catch largemouth bass, you should know not only methods of fishing but also the places where it exists.
• You need to find shallow clean waters that have a lot of vegetations and timbers: it’s what largemouth bass appreciates. Watch the time.
• If the fishing time is a day then you need to find a hiding place of largemouth bass, cause at noon it prefers the deep waters.
• If there is no shadow on the lake, you have a chance to catch largemouth bass in the middle of the lake where are deeper places. In the morning or evening bass prefers to be on the surface of the water hunting on a small fish or insects, hiding in vegetation and snags. Therefore, in this time you should find thickets in order to catch a bass.
• Do not forget such a lure as wobblers. The small size of wobbler is excellent bait in fishing for a big largemouth bass. Also can be useful the rapidly developing technology of fishing – twister.
