Lakes and river bays of the North American continent are inhabited by a close relative of the common pike — muskellunge (musky). Close relationship assumes similarity in the behavior of fish, and of course, the general directions in the fishing technology.

Muskellunge is the largest member of the Esocidae family in the waters of America. Some fish can weigh up to 45 pounds or more. However, such large trophies occur seldom, much more often the weight of the fish caught does not exceed 20 kilograms.

Until the age of ten it grows very fast and then its growth slows down, and the mass continues to increase. Females become sexually mature at the fifth year of life, reaching a length of 60-80 cm and a weight of 2.5-4 kg.

The musky lives mainly in lakes and rivers with relatively weak flow. It can certainly be found in the thickets of underwater vegetation, especially among the water lilies and pondweed.

The musky almost exclusively feeds on fish. Large fish are often lured by frogs, mice, muskrats and small waterfowl.

Tackle for musky fishing

The musky can be usually caught with a spinning rod because the conditions on many waters do not allow to use trolling, and in some American States trolling fishing is banned. Therefore, spinning is not only a single possibility, but often the best way of fishing.

It is pretty tiring to cast all day long. Moreover, usage of an extremely heavy jerkbait rod can turn fishing to hard work. However, there are experts on musky fishing which use light rods.

With such tackle you can fish hands down and while having such rod it is easier to adjust both fishing on moving hook and cast. Powerful rods do not forgive any angler’s mistakes.

So when musky fishing you must have two rods 2.0 m long with test of 80 and 120 g. In addition, you will need two rods from 2.10 to 2.40 m long, with test of 100 g.

Musky fishing tactics and tips

Musky fishing has been so attractive and popular that this species was threatened in the early 70th. Recently, musky abundance began to recover and increase by means of specialized events of its artificial breeding.

But even in the waters where there is much musky, its fishing is not a simple matter, but the using the tips below you will not be left without a catch.

It is more preferable to use backtail-spinners than a simple wobbler, using them it is much easier to implement the fishing on moving hook than with a short jerkbait rod.

You need to catch solely with a multiplier reel but not an inertialess one. Because of large load, habituation is always difficult that disables inertialess reels.

Fishing line

You need to use braid fishing line with a breaking load of 15 to 25 kg.

Casting distance

When catching musky you don’t need to do long-distance casts. Usually one casts at a distance of less than 30 m. To catch a fish on a hook is difficult, but with distance increase to the fish it becomes even harder.

The rule of eight

To use the last chance and to catch a bait stalker, finish fishing on a moving hook by the boat. To do it, spin the figure 8 with the rod tip under water. At this time, bobbin has free running and your thumb firmly presses the line.

The muskellunge prefer shadow. That’s why it can be often seen by berths of summer houses on lakes.

Bait size

Muskies prefer large bait, and you should take them in a large quantity and variety. In the first place, it is clearly topwaters and spinners. Then jerkbaits and simple wobblers follow.
